About us

Welcome to the Institute of Genetics, Zhejiang University! The genetics of Zhejiang University began in 1937. Mr. Tan Jiazhen, the founder of modern Chinese genetics who was the professor of the Department of Biology of Zhejiang University at the time, took the lead in teaching and researching genetics and trained a group of celebrated geneticists such as Xu Daojie, Shi Luji, Sheng Zujia, Liu Zudong, etc, who have made great contributions to the development of genetics in China. After the 1950s, Mr. Chen Shiyi served as a professor and head of the Department of Biology at Zhejiang University. He proposed the yeast haploid cell mating method and discovered the role of nuclear genes and extrachromosomal genes in the expression of yeast respiratory-deficient small colonies. Its synergy is the pioneer of yeast genetics and mitochondrial genetics. After several generations of efforts, Zhejiang University has made considerable progress in genetics, and has cultivated outstanding talents such as Academician Yang Huanming and Academician Xu Guoliang. Genetics is currently a key discipline in Zhejiang Province.

Genetics is a science that studies the laws of heredity and variation in the form, physiology and behavior of life, as well as the structure and function of genes and genomes. It has a long history and is an important frontier subject in the field of life sciences; gene editing, three-dimensional genomes as well as the development and emergence of new technologies and methods such as bioinformatics and high-resolution imaging, provides us with new hopes and challenges for understanding the nature of life and improving human health from the perspective of genetics. In order to further strengthen the discipline construction and scientific research of genetics, and make the genetics of Zhejiang University create another glorious glory, with the strong support and care of the university, the genetics related teachers and overseas well-known alumni joined and together establish the Institute of Genetics of Zhejiang University in 2010.

The Institute of Genetics of Zhejiang University currently has 11 professors, 6 associate professors, 2 lecturers and other members, and there are more than ten co-professors on campus. The Institute of Genetics of Zhejiang University aims to build a world-class and open research institute, and is committed to conduct original research on the basis and application of genetics; to inherit and carry forward Chinese genetics as its mission, to educate and cultivate a solid foundation in life sciences and future life science talents with international frontier vision.

The main research directions of the institute include: medical genomics, computational and systems biology, mitochondrial biomedicine, reproduction and genetic development biology, and stem cell and regeneration biology. We sincerely look forward to your joining!
